Lani Captive Woman
Her name, Keopuolani, meant The Gathering of the Clouds of Heaven. Her father, King Kiwalao of Hawaii, called her Lani— Heaven. He and his queen, Lilia, believed Lani was a special gift from heaven. But in 1778, when Lani was born, they gave her to the king’s mother, Kalola. “You care for her,” the king said. “It’s the way of our ancestors.”
